Merlot VDL is a well-developed, elegant stallion who stands well in the rectangular model, with a slightly downward direction of the back. The head is sufficiently expressive. The neck is sufficiently long with a light head-neck connection. The neck is good in length and shape, but the stallion could have a bit more curvature in the top line of the neck. The shoulder is of good length and positioning. When viewed from the front, the stallion is still narrow. The withers are well developed and of good length. The back is of good length and sufficiently muscled. The loins are well connected, of good length, and sufficiently muscled. The croup is sufficiently long, slightly sloped in positioning, and sufficiently muscled. The thigh muscle is sufficiently long. The foreleg is correct when viewed from the side and front. The hind leg is correctly positioned and slightly long. The pasterns, front and back, are of good length and correctly positioned. The foundation is sufficiently developed and of good quality. The feet are well developed, well-shaped, and of good quality. The heels are well developed.
Pedigree:
Merlot VDL is a son of the successful Grand Prix-level keur stallion Bordeaux. Bordeaux is increasingly proving himself in breeding, and with Merlot VDL, his eighth son has been approved by the KWPN. Merlot VDL was honored as a premium stallion at the KWPN Stallion Show 2020.
The dam of Merlot VDL is the provisional keur mare Hyacinth-Vrouwe, who is descended from the multiple world champion Florencio. Merlot VDL is her first offspring. The preferent granddam Dolce Vita Vrouwe is descended from the dressage sire Vivaldi and is also the mother of the KWPN stallion Incognito (by Davino V.O.D.). The dam line continues with the preferent star mare Weidevrouwe (by Houston), who is the mother of the Z-level horse Joyrider (by Negro), and the grandmother of several sport horses, including the ZZ-Licht-classified High Score (by Charmeur). The Donnerhall daughter Mimosavrouwe is known as the mother of the international Grand Prix horse Glock’s Undercover, who has won multiple victories under Edward Gal.
Performance report:
Merlot VDL is an honest and sympathetic stallion with an excellent attitude. The stallion has a great willingness to work and is easy to handle. The walk is pure, with good space and use of the body. In the trot, the stallion has sufficient push-off, a lot of lightness, good space, a lot of shoulder freedom, and an active hind leg that comes well under. The canter is uphill, with good technique and very good space. Merlot VDL moves with a lot of suppleness, excellent self-carriage, and good balance. As a dressage horse, Merlot VDL has a lot to very much potential and gives his rider an excellent feeling.
