Jumping Stallions
Jumping stallions are selected based on conformation, health, character, and their natural ability as a jumping horse. Key aspects include canter, reflexes, technique, and scope. Attitude and willingness to perform also play an important role. Pedigree and performance from the dam line are explicitly taken into account. The selection objective is to breed jumping horses capable of performing at the highest international level.
Dressage Stallions
Dressage stallions are selected based on conformation, health, character, and their natural ability as a dressage horse. Evaluation focuses on purity, rhythm, and scope in the walk, as well as suppleness, power, posture, and carrying ability in trot and canter. Attitude and rideability are also essential criteria. Pedigree and performance from the dam line are explicitly taken into account. The ultimate goal is to breed dressage horses with the potential to compete at Grand Prix level.
Harness Horse Stallions
The selection of harness horse stallions focuses on the ability to perform in the highest competition classes. Emphasis is placed on the quality of the trot, including suspension, a foreleg that reaches well forward with high action, and a powerful, well-engaged hind leg. A proud posture, supported by a long neck carried vertically from the chest, is essential. Conformation, health, character, and pedigree also play an important role in the evaluation.
Gelder Horse Stallions
Within the Gelder horse breeding direction, the emphasis is on versatility. Selection focuses on both genotypic and phenotypic traits that allow for broad usability. A Gelder horse must be easy to work both in harness and under saddle. A reliable, willing, and uncomplicated character is of decisive importance.
Individual approval takes place on the advice of the stallion selection committee. These stallions are assessed on conformation. If results of radiographic examination and/or genomic breeding values for osteochondrosis are available, these are published.
Individually approved stallions receive the same status within the KWPN as approved stallions. Foals from these stallions are registered in the foal book, and mares can be entered into the studbook from the age of three without additional conditions. Individual approval is reserved for stallions of exceptional quality.
