Because a carrier of the gene appears completely healthy, only a DNA test can provide clarity. By testing mares and stallions, breeders can avoid combinations that would result in a non-viable foal. The KWPN supports this process by offering reliable and accessible testing options.
WFFS test during foal registration
When registering a foal, you can immediately request a WFFS test. During identification (sketching) and, if applicable, microchipping, the inspector takes a hair sample. This sample is used for DNA analysis, allowing you to know the WFFS status of the foal at an early stage.
WFFS test for older horses
It is advisable to test broodmares and potential breeding stallions for WFFS, so you know whether your horse is a carrier. A WFFS test can be requested for both KWPN and non-KWPN horses. For most older KWPN horses, a hair sample is already stored in the archive. After registering the horse for testing, this sample will be retrieved. If no sample is available, you will be contacted to arrange the procedure. In that case, additional veterinary costs may apply for collecting a new hair sample.
If you have a foal stabled at the same time that needs to be chipped, the passport inspector can combine this with collecting a hair sample from your older horse. The sample must then be sent to the KWPN together with a declaration of sample collection.
Tested outside the KWPN or non-KWPN horse
If a horse has been tested outside the KWPN and you want the result recorded in the KWPN database, the test must meet certain conditions:
- the hair sample must have been taken by a veterinarian, who has completed and signed a KWPN Witness Statement for Sample Collection;
- this statement must be attached by the laboratory to the official result, including:
- the name and registration number/chip number of the horse;
- the identification number of the hair sample used.
If your horse is registered with another studbook, a copy of the passport must be provided so the horse can be registered under your name in “MyKWPN” and the test result can be added.
Results and application
You can apply for a WFFS test via “MyKWPN.” The only requirements are that you, as the applicant, must be a member of the KWPN and that the horses must be registered in your name. You can submit applications for multiple horses at once. The aim is to provide results within four to six weeks after the hair sample has been received. You will receive an email once the result is available in “MyKWPN.”
After logging in, select the relevant horse and, under the “Actions” menu, choose “Download document: WFFS (DNA test).” There you can view, save, and/or print the result
