Horses from the four breeding directions of the KWPN are also widely used as driving horses, eventers, and hunters.
Driving horses
KWPN horses are popular in driving sport due to their powerful movement, strong forehand, and reliable character. They perform well in various disciplines, such as single, pair, and four-in-hand driving. At major championships, Dutch-bred horses are strongly represented, often resulting in impressive medal achievements. A good driving horse has stamina, a correct walk, and a relaxed, willing attitude. The harness horse stands out in driving sport for its calm temperament: it remains composed, is not easily distracted, and is eager to work. For this reason, it is widely used at international level. The KWPN breeding policy focuses on an optimal balance between talent, health, and character-essential qualities for driving sport.
Eventing horses
Modern eventing requires an athletic, healthy, and courageous sport horse with great stamina qualities that align well with KWPN breeding. Many successful horses in this Olympic discipline are bred with a clear genetic focus on jumping ability, combined with a sufficient percentage of Thoroughbred blood. In the dressage phase of eventing, relaxation, good contact, and balance are more important than extravagant movement. The cross-country phase demands athletic, brave horses with excellent jumping ability, as well as strong galloping capacity and endurance. In the jumping phase, less emphasis is placed on extreme scope compared to pure showjumping, but the horse must still be careful and sharp enough after the demanding cross-country phase to jump clear rounds. Many showjumpers meet these requirements, which is why demand for KWPN eventing horses continues to grow, reflected in strong results in the WBFSH rankings.
Hunters
The hunter discipline requires a comfortable, smooth-moving horse with a calm and cooperative attitude. Courses consist of natural obstacles, and combinations are judged on style. A good hunter has an elegant, refined appearance and a balanced, willing character. KWPN horses are particularly suited for this discipline due to their conformation, character, and jumping technique. Many KWPN stallions have produced successful hunters, and numerous KWPN horses have been sold to the United States, where they perform exceptionally well. In the Netherlands, the discipline is still developing, but interest is growing.
